san mateo students for change
Students for Change works with students, teachers, and other adult allies to improve student participation in important educational issues in their schools. This project will bring together a core group of student leaders in a San Mateo School district for the following activities:
- Conducting research about the state of youth participation in school change;
- Giving small grants to student-led groups for ideas that strengthen student participation; and
- Making policy recommendations to schools and the district about improving student participation.
YLI will partner with a specific high school district in San Mateo County to carry out Students for Change. Students for Change is a project of the Youth Leadership Institute, and made possible with support from the Walter S. Johnson Foundation.
It is grounded in youth development standards of practice and is designed to:
- Strengthen student competencies in civic participation;
- Increase student opportunities for involvement in important school decisions; and
- Spark interest and increase capacity of teachers, faculty, administrators and other adult allies in increasing student participation.
A core group of student leaders and adult allies will join together to assess student priorities and concerns, including the current state of student involvement in important educational decisions. This group will use their findings to identify how they want to give out small grants to their peers. Student-led groups from across the district, in partnership with teachers or adult allies, can then apply for grants of $1,000 or more for project ideas that respond to these concerns.
Finally, this core group will incorporate research and grantmaking results into a report that recommends strategies to strengthen student participation at the school site and district level. YLI hopes to identify an existing student group, like a district-level student advisory council, to act as this core group, along with participation from additional adult allies.
