youth grants board
Youth Grants Board (YGB) is a program that encourages, trains, and provides financial support to young people who are interested in improving their community, for themselves and their peers.
YGB gives money (grants), to community-based projects created and run by groups of young people. All decisions about grants in the YGB program are also made by young people who are trained grantmakers and who relate to the issues, ideas, and enthusiasm that youth grantseekers have.
Throughout all aspects of the YGB program, youth are given opportunities to connect with other youth, to make powerful decisions, and to take action that will positively impact their communities.
How Youth Grants Board Works
- YLI recruits, trains, and supports a Youth Grants Board (YGB) of up to 10 members, who must live in Marin and range in age from 12-23.
- YGB has an annual grant cycle through which youth groups can apply for project funds of up to $5,000.
- YGB also offers mini-grants for smaller scale projects. Youth groups can apply for these funds at any time. Mini-grants can be as much as $500.
- YGB has funding guidelines about what kind of projects are eligible for a grant. Projects must be youth-led, address a real issue or need in the community, and improve the lives of young people.
- YGB requires youth groups who wish to apply for funding during regular grant cycles to attend an applicant workshop. At the workshop, applicant groups receive the YGB Grantseeker workbook, learn about how to apply for funding and get help writing their grant application.
- Applicant groups make a presentation to YGB members about their project.
- YGB members decide which applicant groups to fund based on the guidelines for funding, using information from the application and the presentation.
