youth initiated projects
Youth Initiated Projects (YIP) enables young people in San Francisco to design and implement projects that address challenges facing their communities. YIP provides youth-led project teams with grants, training and ongoing support so that they can put their ideas into action.
Grant decisions are made by the YIP Review Board, made up of young grantmakers who review grant applications from youth-led project teams and provide overall strategic direction for the YIP program. The YIP Program enables young people to connect with adults and other youth in taking action that will positively impact their communities.
How Youth Initiated Projects Works
- YLI recruits, trains, and supports a YIP Review Board of up to 10 members, who must live in San Francisco and range in age from 12-23.
- YIP has an annual grant cycle through which youth groups can apply for project funds of up to $5,000.
- YIP has funding guidelines about what kinds of projects are eligible for a grant. Projects must be youth-led, address a real issue or need in the community, and improve the lives of young people.
- YIP requires youth groups who wish to apply for funding during regular grant cycles to attend an applicant workshop.
- Writing a grant can be a challenge, that's why YIP offers assistance in planning projects and writing the application. We have a YIP Grantseeker workbook that can help. We can also meet with you and/or your adult ally face-to-face, or provide help over the phone.
- Applicant groups must turn in their application to the YIP Review Board by the deadline to be considered for funding. The YIP Review Board reads and reviews all applications.
- Applicant groups make a presentation to the YIP Review Board about their project.
- The YIP Review Board decides which applicant groups to fund based on the guidelines for funding, using information from the application and the presentation.
