student advisory council
Young people have great ideas about how to make their schools better. Sometimes all they need is a chance to make these ideas heard.
The Student Advisory Council (SAC) provides high school students with a line of communication to the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), board of education and superintendent. The SAC has representation from each of the city's public high schools and allows youth to have their say on school reform and on issues such as school-based violence, and school meals and nutrition.
As coordinator of the SAC, YLI provides the group with training and ongoing support. YLI helps the SAC gather information on student perspectives and identify priority issues to take to the Board of Education and Superintendent. YLI also identifies adult allies teachers, counselors, assistant principals, and other school staff who can support the SAC's efforts at individual school sites.
The SAC not only makes school- and district-level policies more responsive to young people, but also provides youth with leadership opportunities and a greater sense of connection to their school.
