tobacco prevention projects in san mateo county

The Tobacco Prevention Program, an initiative of the County of San Mateo, supports a variety of community-based programs and services aimed at reducing tobacco use among county residents. With this program's support, YLI coordinates two projects that link youth civic engagement and tobacco prevention.

Tobacco Policy Action Initiative (TPAI)
The Tobacco Policy Action Initiative (TPAI) engages groups of young people in taking action to reduce the availability, promotion and use of tobacco products, especially among youth. TPAI includes four youth-led Tobacco Action Teams that use policy advocacy — either introducing new policies or calling for better enforcement of existing ones — to create communities that strive to be tobacco-free.

Organizing Project Local Impact
A few individuals can make a difference. That's the idea behind Organizing Project Local Impact, which recruited and trained youth prevention organizers for an intensive, hands-on experience in tobacco control advocacy. Recently, these young people participated in a tobacco prevention rally in Sacramento, and later traveled to the annual shareholders meeting of the world's largest tobacco company, Altria Group, to address corporate leaders and the media about the company's business practices.
