Youth and Community: Engaging Young People in Philanthropy and Service PDF
W.K Kellogg Foundation, August 2003
In 2003, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation conducted a three-month national study to document the many ways in which nonprofit organizations are engaging young people and helping them to become activists and leaders. Drawing on interviews with leading practitioners in philanthropy and youth development, this publication describes promising practices and offers recommendations for how youth-serving organizations and other institutions can increase opportunities for youth philanthropy and youth civic engagement.

Community Programs to Promote Youth Development
Jacquelynne Eccles and Jennifer Gootman, National Academy of Sciences, 2002
This landmark national study examines how well communities are providing young people with a full range of developmental assets and opportunities. Eccles and Gootman review data from a variety of community programs to identify what's working in the youth development field, what gaps in services exist, and what research is needed moving forward.
