Services Offered
Research and Evaluation
The Center for Training, Research, and Evaluation offers research and evaluation services to communities and organizations involved in youth engagement and development. These services are offered in two ways: the Youth Leadership Institute staff can conduct an evaluation of a program or project, or the staff can facilitate a youth-led research or evaluation project.
The Youth Leadership Institute is available to serve as an independent evaluator of programs ranging in size and impact from local- and community-level projects to statewide or national initiatives. Institute staff is experienced in designing evaluations, developing logic models, and developing data collection tools for a range of programs and projects within the youth engagement field.
For the past 15 years, the Youth Leadership Institute has been the statewide evaluator for the California Friday Night Live Partnership.

Youth-Led Research and Evaluation
Information is knowledge. When young people participate in conducting and analyzing research on their communities, they begin the process of creating positive change within their neighborhoods, programs, and community institutions.
The Youth Leadership Institute is available to support and lead teams of young people and adults in research and evaluation projects that encourage community participation and drive change on issues facing youth.
Institute staff provide training and tools on research and evaluation projects from start to finish, including supporting youth and adults in the following areas:
- Developing research questions
- Determining how to answer research questions, including choosing appropriate methods and sample of research participants
- Developing tools and effectively implementing data collection methods, such as PhotoVoice, focus groups, interviews, surveys, and observation
- Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data
- Developing evidence-based recommendations based on the information collected
