YLI Recruits Youth for White House Panel in Washington D.C.
YLI recruited and trained youth leader Jose-Luis Mejia to lend his voice in the national discussion unfolding on how to improve the outlook for “opportunity youth,” young people ages 16-24 who are out of school and out of work.
Mejia as well as Shaakirah Medford, who was also recruited through YLI and is a member of the All Stars Project in New York City, both participated in the White House Summer Jobs Plus Summit in Washington D.C. January 5, 2012.
Both youth shared their perspectives with Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, and were thrilled to have President Obama join the meeting where he gave each youth a hug and spoke about challenging the nation to help every young adult find a pathway to long-term success.
Mejia and Medford both received many accolades for their contributions to the conversation, with Mejia’s sentiment that “No decision made about us – without us” standing out as a central principal to the work ahead.
